Reduce Highway Skidding Incidents Through Friction-based Road Testing.
Continuous Road Testing Ltd has developed continuous friction measuring equipment for the purpose of preventing skidding collisions on winter ice contaminant conditions. The Ice-Check Roadtester measures road surface friction at highway speed providing more accurate continuous measurements, than any other mobile method of measuring friction. The Ice-Check Roadtester provides an effective solution to prevent vehicle collisions resulting from unseen ice, as well as misjudged road conditions.
Highway legal speed limit signs are largely based upon clear road conditions, not slippery, winter contaminant roads. When road surface friction is higher than .65 friction coefficient, the pavement will invariably be free of ice or ice-related winter contaminant. The danger of skidding arises at lower values of friction. The frequency of ice-related collisions may increase in a reverse proportion to friction coefficient as the road surface is increasingly ice-contaminated. Then there will be observed an acceleration in collision frequency (depending on prevailing traffic speeds) when friction falls below .45 friction coefficient. The risk of skidding incidents will be related to the characteristics of a vehicle and the tires, in addition to driving speed, With that in mind, the key thing to prevent or avoid a skidding incident is to reduce vehicle speed commensurate with the level of friction.
Road Surface Friction Enables Vehicles to Steer, Brake, or Accelerate.
The continuous friction report facilitates quick decision-making for driving, applying materials to the road, lowering the speed limit or closing a road to traffic. Our reports include a screen display that scrolls and has a two-digit value for friction.
Any driver with our friction software can see what was recorded, where it was recorded, by driving in the same lane after the initial measurements were recorded. For quick decision-making there is a need to recognize a sudden downward fall of friction that could be more hazardous than a gradual descent. A sudden downward trend or “patch” of clear or translucent ice can be a major cause of skidding since traffic is travelling far too fast if the road has been bare up to that point. Hazard recognition capability in your testing apparatus is a key to collision prevention.
